چکیده

OWL is a popular language for ontologies. Yet, the restriction to a decidable description logic often hinders ontology designers from expressing knowledge that cannot (or can only in quite complicated ways) be expressed in a description logic. A practice to deal with this problem is to intersperse OWL ontologies with first-order axioms, e.g. in the case of bio-ontologies where mereological relations such as parthood are of great importance, though not definable in OWL. However, these remain informal annotations to inform the human designer, rather than first-class citizens of the ontology with formal semantics and impact on reasoning. A variety of languages is used for formalising ontologies.4 Some of these, as RDF, OBO and UML, can be seen more or less as fragments and notational variants of OWL, while others, like F-logic and Common Logic (CL), clearly go beyond the expressiveness of OWL. This situation has motivated the distributed ontology language (DOL), a language currently under active development within the ISO standard 17347 Ontology Integration and Interoperability (OntoIOp). In DOL, heterogeneous and distributed ontologies can be expressed. At the heart of this approach is a graph of ontology languages and translations [9]. This graph will enable users to

Analyzing the problem of meaning in Shabastari’s Golshane Raz

Man has always been finding a complete model for semantics since the beginning. A model which can as a paradigm affects all branches of sciences. In the view of author, such a model can be found in Golshane Raz. Introducing the model from the work mentioned, the paper has tried to explain its sub structural foundations in three fields of ontology, epistemology and semantics. Some of the foundat...

Circularity in Searle’s Social Ontology: With a Hegelian Reply

John Searle’s theory of social ontology posits that there are indispensable normative components in the linguistic apparatuses termed status functions, collective intentionality, and collective recognition, all of which, he argues, make the social world. In this paper, I argue that these building blocks of Searle’s social ontology are caught in a petitio of constitutive circularity. Mo...

Institutes: A simpler semantics for heterogeneous ontologies

We consider heterogeneous ontologies, i.e. ontologies whose specifications allow to blend different ontology languages such as propositional logic, OWL, first-order logic, Common Logic, or various extensions of these. In order to give such ontologies a precise formal semantics, we need a suitable notion of abstract logic. We here introduce a new framework, called institute theory, that extends ...

Dynamic Categorization of Semantics of Fashion Language: A Memetic Approach

Categories are not invariant. This paper attempts to explore the dynamic nature of semantic category, in particular, that of fashion language, based on the cognitive theory of Dawkins’ memetics, a new theory of cultural evolution. Semantic attributes of linguistic memes decrease or proliferate in replication and spreading, which involves a dynamic development of semantic category. More specific...
